How does hand reflexology work?

Hand reflexology is a holistic therapy that affects the whole body by skilfully stimulating the reflexes on the hands. It corresponds to traditional Chinese medicine, according to which health is a state of uninterrupted energy flow in the body. Any blockages to it manifest as illnesses of the body or spirit, and unblocking stasis is the beginning of the healing process. Why? The hands are a reflection of the whole body and therefore the pressure of the reflexes affects all the corresponding organs, systems and tissues.

What does the treatment look like?

The spa therapist begins the treatment by relaxing the hands. Using mainly the thumb, they massage every inch of skin in a circular or pinpoint motion, primarily on the inside of the hand. Massaging a given reflex is sending a series of impulses to the central nervous system.

By stimulating these centres, the blood vessels of the organ corresponding to the reflex are dilated and its blood supply is improved. The amount of oxygen in the area is increased, resulting in an accelerated metabolism, flushing out toxins and providing more antibodies that guard health. Pressing the fingers affects the head, massaging the middle of the hand affects the liver or stomach.
